Il cielo sopra Opatija, durante il Festival dei fuochi d'artificio diventa simile a una tela pittorica impreziosita da stupende e sfarzose esplosioni di colore. Dal pontone nel mare di fronte a Opatija si lanciano varie corografie infuocate che illuminano il cielo con stupendi colori. Nelle pause fra un fuoco e l'altro, e prevista della musica dal vivo interpretata dalle migliori band musicali e una ricca offerta gastronomica.

For the last thirty three years, this exciting race of self-made vehicles that run on ball-bearings (known locally as "balinjere" – hence the name) instead of wheels, down Opatija's main street, to the delight of thousands of spectators, has always been the original attraction of the carnival in Opatija. The Balinjerada is partly a race in which the "pilots" of these unusual homemade vehicles must show their driving skills, and partly a carnival parade, in which carnival groups make ironic comments on current events in society with their imaginative constructions, in which they have invested months of effort.

Every year, thousands of visitors choose Opatija as a destination to see in the New Year. On 1st January, they are invited to the terrace of the Hotel Kvarner, where Opatija's mayor and his closest associates express their best wishes for the coming year in several languages and invite them to visit this town again soon. The exclusive glass in which the champagne is served on this occasion can be kept as a souvenir of this moment.
