Traditionally - for centuries in Liburnija masks take over on the feast of St. Anton, January the 17th and the Carnival folly begins. Dancing and singing, "kampanat&obahajat" until Ash Wednesday. The sound of Antonja's horn, hand over the town's key and hoisting of carnival flag mark the start of Carnival 2009. Opatija is ready!

At the time of carnival, Kvarner takes centre stage of Croatian crarnival, masked fancy-dress parties providing a memorable experience fused with Mediterranean and Continental influences. Almost every place holds carnival festivities, and some towns have several carnival festivities at the same time. Opatija holds carnival events in tents, halls in the streets at Liburnia Riviera Hotels. Carnival time in Lovran
In Lovran in the course of Carnival, festivities and children’s Carnival gatherings are held every weekend, and the main event is the International Carnival parade on Ash Wednesday - the end of masked festivities.
Tourist Board of Matulji for the third time organizes the "The Pageant for Miss Carnival 2009". Girl must be 18 years old, but there is no age limit for older contestants. Must dance potresujka, drink two deciliters of wine, make carnival flower, sing carnival songs, bribe the jury and ride the "carneval dummy" in the wheelbarrow.The winner will get the 5000 kn!
