Park Angiolina - Villa Angiolina

Mit dem Ausbau der Villa und der Anlage des Parks setzte der Geschäftsmann Iginio Scarpa aus Rijeka den Grundstein für die spätere Entwicklung Optaijas als Seebad. Die Villa „Angiolina“ benannte er nach seiner verstorbenen Frau.
Danach öffnete Opatija ihre Tore für eine Reihe illustrer Gäste und Reisende, darunter namhafte Persönlichkeiten wie die österreichische Kaiserin Maria Anna, der Botaniker Heinrich Noë, der kroatische Graf Ban Josip Jelačić und andere, die ihre Begeisterung für die lokale Vegetation und das Klima Opatijas verbreiteten.

Die Villa hatte viele Besitzer: Scarpas Sohn, Paolo, hatte bereits 1869 die Idee ein Sanatorium zu gründen. Danach erwarb sie ein mährischer Adeliger namens Chorinsky, schließlich ging sie in den Besitz der Südbahn-Gesellschaft über. Während dieser Zeit beherbergte sie das Thronfolgerpaar Stephanie und Rudolf und ihren Gast, den Schriftsteller Peter Rosegger. Auch die Wagon-Lit Gesellschaft, die Heilbad-Kommission und andere waren Besitzer der Villa, wobei der Preis der Villa stieg und stieg: während Scarpa noch 700 Gulden für Grund und Boden investierte, schnellte der Preis 1910 auf 2.5 Millionen Kronen hoch.

Zu Scarpas Zeit war die Villa vor Allem ein beliebter Treffpunkt der High Society au Rijeka. Am Ende der österreichischen Herrschaft, war sie Sitz der Leitung der Heilbad-Kommission. Heute ist in der Villa das kroatische Museum für Tourismus untergebracht.
