Madonna del Mare

Das Original der Statue „Madonna del Mare“ stand ursprünglich dort, wo sich heute die berühmte Statue des Mädchens mit der Möwe befindet. Sie sollte über die Seelen des Grafen Kesselstatt und dessen Gattin Fries wachen, die 1891 unweit von dieser Stelle ertranken.

In den 50er Jahren wurde die stark durch das Meer in Mitleidenschaft gezogene Madonna in die Villa Angiolina gebracht, während eine vergoldete Kopie vor der St. Jakobs Kirche aufgestellt wurde.

Schöpfer der Statue „Madonna del Mare“ war der Bildhauer Hans Rathausky aus Graz, der auch den Brunnen „Helios und Selene“ im Park der St. Jakobs Kirche und die Büste von Theodor Billroth im Park Angiolina schuf.
